Chapter 17

It’s Just Business

May 19, 1939

Willy took Sophie’s advice on how to prepare for his meeting with the Czech buyer and the Dresdner Bank official. “I grew up in Berlin, remember?” She smiled as she gave him a kiss. “If you want to negotiate a price for Kohut Stoffe, you must impress the Germans—look confident, unbreakable.”

She helped him get dressed in a double-breasted pinstriped broadcloth suit with French facings, a starched white shirt, and a blue bow tie, with his brown trilby tilted at an angle. She tucked a lily-of-the valley into the Dragon Tail buttonhole. “That will distract them from staring at your hand,” she said, adjusting his bow tie. “And be firm and precise,” Have you got the mayor’s letter.? Make sure you get market price.”

Willy frowned. Why was she saying this? He was the businessman. “My finger may be damaged, strudel, but my brain is working perfectly. I know these people want to get the store as cheaply as they can and I’m not expecting the moon ... their offer is far below what it is worth. Whatever I can negotiate, I’ll cash it out on the spot.”

Sophie’s cheeks turned pink. “I was just trying to help, you know.”

“Do you still want me as your bodyguard?” asked Laci, putting a big arm round Willy’s shoulders. “Stop you from getting robbed on the way home.”

Willy winced with pain. “Yes, but don’t hug me like that again. We go together to the bank, and you wait for me outside ... . ”
